Rip carpet out, Paint the floors

As most know, the air pollutants we cannot see are the ones that can travel deepest into our lungs, so after coughing through a recent wild fire smoke exposure in our community, we ripped all the carpets out in our house and painted the floors. Some with Behr's deck paint and others with a marine paint to watch the difference. We did install a washable carpet runner over the center 26" of the stairs (just the "tread" part), using Velcro so it will stay down until we lift it up for machine washing. While we have an area rug in two rooms, a professional carpet cleaner will attend to them twice a year. By the way, we also had our air ducts cleaned by a high powered system. Good luck!

the benefit of carpet
by: dave@healthier-cleaning-products.com

Thanks for relaying your experience. One of the benefits of carpet is its ability to be cleaned of all the pollution and contaminants which can accumulate due to everyday living or unexpected disasters.

Think of carpeting as a giant filter on the floor which grabs all the dirt and pollution that falls on it. Just like a furnace filer that grabs all the contaminants that flow through it, it needs to be changed or cleaned to keep it functioning properly. The same goes for carpeting, it needs to be cleaned frequently to function properly.

When all the carpet is removed, there is no longer anything to grab the contaminants and allergens. They are free to float around the house like tumbleweeds. Subject to air movements of the house like opening doors or the heating/cooling system of the building.

I never understood the advice of doctors who suggest removing all the carpet to help with allergies or asthma.

The key is to CLEAN THE CARPET on a regular basis.
